Rule Based Systems vs Intuition.

Much of early Artificial Intelligence was based around rule based systems.  The most basic of rule based systems would be of the form:

If (this thing happens) then (do that thing)

This reactionary approach is very useful at times eg:

If (the gates are down at the railway crossing and lights are red) then (wait until the gates go up and the lights go green before attempting to cross)

But what about the day the gates break down and the lights are green but the gates are down.  What do we do then.  Theoretically we could keep formulating more and more rules to account for every eventuality but inevitably we will not be able to account for everything.

The power of our intuition is the creative spark that helps us to concoct new rules each time, or better still react to situations in which the standard rules do not apply.

People tend to live their lives on either one or the other, rules or intuition.  Many religious practices are rule based to keep people safe and yet many sports require the gut instincts of intuition for risks to pay off.

Setting rules against intuition of course a pointless waste of time.  John McEnroe, the great tennis player, thrived on his intuition but in the end if the ball was out, it was out, no matter how much he protested.

Applying intuition to the application of the rules...

Well thats a different thing altogether.
