Electoral Reform.

Ok, let me get this whole electoral reform thing straight in my head.  The story so far is that the party that didn't manage to get a mandate to govern under the old system has formed a coalition with the party who came last in the election and together they formed a government.  So we have the people who we were not sure we wanted with the people we were pretty sure we didn't want in power.

The basis of this unlikely pact was that these two uncomfortable bedfellows would agree to put electoral reform on the agenda.  In other words to do away with the system which put them there in the first place.  So far this is the only thing that makes sense.  Or so it would seem.

Well if it were truly the case that the general public had a dire thirst for electoral reform then logically the party that came last would have come first.  Perhaps it was a lack of follow through on any clear policies that saw them faltering at the polling booths.

Anyhow we are now to be given the chance to choose by way of a referendum.  Do we want proportional representation or not?  It sounds logical, but the natural effect is likely to be more hung parliaments and I am not absolutely sure that's something I want to encourage.
