For the sake of...

People often say that they would die for the sake of something or other. This seems a little counter productive to me. On the other hand the thought of living for the sake of something sounds quite burdensome. To die for the sake of something is like producing a one hit wonder. Everyone buys into it for a while and then forgets about it later. To live for the sake of something is like listening to a broken record that you cannot stop over and over.

Why don't we dump "for the sake of" and live for ourselves? Would we be guilty of selfishness? Is it easier to live or die for the sake of something else and abandon ourselves? Is that truly responsible? Or is that truly selfish?

If everyone were responsible for themselves then they could be much more functional with others. But it is easier to find a worth cause than to find onself worthy of attention.
